The Best of Slovenia and Northern Italy, One Journey

Slovenia's alpine calm and Northern Italy's storied elegance meet on this journey — one route, two countries, no compromise.

It follows a natural arc from Slovenia's alpine capital, Ljubljana, and the iconic shores of Lake Bled, through the medieval streets of Piran on the Adriatic coast, across the border into Verona and the lakeside towns of Lake Garda, and through the historic region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia — including Palmanova, Aquileia, Trieste and the Miramare Castle, to name a few — before returning to Slovenia's coast.

You can also shape part of the journey yourself. On your final day, choose between Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle — Slovenia's most visited cave and a fortress built into its own rock face — or the more dramatic Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage canyon carved by an underground river. Iconic Piran completes the day either way — one of the most charming towns on the entire journey.

Each day is rich with discovery, carrying you from one unforgettable place to the next until your hotel welcomes you as evening falls.

If you'd rather stay within Slovenia, Classic Slovenia: The Essential Journey covers the country's most iconic landmarks — ideal for first-time visitors — while Scenic Slovenia: From the Alps to the Adriatic follows an inspiring and picturesque route through the Alps and the Adriatic coast.

Places You'll Visit

Ljubljana

One of Europe’s greenest capitals, Ljubljana blends a rich history with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Wander through its charming medieval streets, cross the famous Dragon Bridge, and discover the legends that made the dragon the symbol of the city. With its beautiful riverside setting, vibrant cultural life, and growing gastronomic scene, Ljubljana is often considered one of Europe’s most delightful hidden capitals.

Lake Bled

Slovenia’s most iconic destination and one of the most photographed alpine lakes in Europe. Surrounded by mountains and crowned by a thousand-year-old castle perched high above the water, Lake Bled looks like something from a fairy tale. The charming lakeside town of Bled is a wonderful place to relax, stroll along the shoreline, and enjoy the beauty of the region in every season.

Udine & Cividale del Friuli

Two contrasting stops along the Friuli route. Udine carries genuine Venetian charm — elegant arcades, old palazzos and Piazza Libertà, often called the finest Venetian-style square outside Venice. Nearby, the smaller Cividale del Friuli feels older still: a UNESCO-listed town once ruled by Lombard dukes, crossed by the legendary Devil's Bridge.

Palmanova

A 16th-century fortress town built by Venetian engineers as a perfect nine-pointed star, designed so no enemy could approach unseen. Its radial streets converge on a vast central square, giving Palmanova an almost geometric, otherworldly feel that's best appreciated from above — though walking its quiet, symmetrical streets is a striking experience in itself. Fewer than 5,000 people live within its walls today.

Aquileia

Once known as the second Rome, Aquileia was among the largest cities of the Roman Empire and capital of an entire province. Its UNESCO-listed basilica still dominates the skyline, its bell tower visible for miles across the plain — and inside lies one of the world's finest surviving Roman mosaics, a vast 4th-century floor that stretches beneath your feet in extraordinary detail.

Grado & Porto Piccolo

A lagoon town and a luxury hideaway, side by side on the Adriatic. Grado's old fishing harbor and pastel-colored streets are made for a slow seaside lunch, with fresh seafood and views over the marina's forest of masts. A short drive away, Porto Piccolo feels like another world entirely — an exclusive marina village tucked into its own private bay, with crystal-clear water and a quiet, secluded glamour rarely found on this stretch of coast.

Trieste & Miramare Castle

Trieste doesn't feel like most Italian cities — and there's a reason for that. It belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire for over five centuries, earning it the nickname "Little Vienna by the Sea," where grand coffeehouses and elegant squares sit beside the Adriatic. Just outside the city, Miramare Castle rises straight from the sea cliffs — a fairy-tale residence surrounded by gardens, fountains and sweeping views over the Gulf of Trieste.

Verona

Verona has the kind of romance that doesn't need explaining — this is the city of Romeo and Juliet, after all, and the balcony associated with the story still draws crowds to its courtyard walls covered in love notes. But Verona is more than its legend: a Roman arena older than the Colosseum still hosts opera under the stars, and the streets around Piazza delle Erbe are some of the most elegant in northern Italy.

Peschiera & Sirmione

Two of Lake Garda's most photographed towns, both built on narrow peninsulas jutting into the water. Sirmione sits at the tip of its own spit of land, guarded by a moated medieval castle and famous since Roman times for its thermal springs. A short drive away, Peschiera's star-shaped fortress walls and canal-lined streets give it a quieter, more lived-in charm.

Limone sul Garda & Malcesine

On Garda's northern shore, the mountains seem to rise straight out of the water. Malcesine is one of the lake's prettiest stops — its old castle stands guard above a row of colorful houses, and a cable car climbs from the waterfront to sweeping views in just a few minutes. Nearby, Limone sul Garda is just as charming, its lemon gardens once so famous they gave the town its name.

Piran

Piran is a beautifully preserved historic town and one of the cultural treasures of the Slovenian coast. With its medieval architecture, narrow winding streets leading down to the main square, charming cafés, and Italian-inspired restaurants, it is widely considered one of the most photogenic and picturesque towns on the Adriatic Sea.

Your Choice of Excursion

Your journey includes one of the following excursions — choose whichever appeals to you most

Postojna Cave

The most visited cave in Europe! A unique underground railway takes visitors deep into a spectacular world of vast chambers and winding passages filled with remarkable stalactites, stalagmites, and natural rock formations. Here you can also see the famous olm — a rare amphibian often called the “human fish” and surrounded by local legends that once linked it to dragons.

Škocjan Caves

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most dramatic cave systems in the world. Unlike any other cave in Slovenia, Škocjan opens into a series of vast underground canyons — some reaching over 100 metres in height — carved by the Reka River as it disappears beneath the karst landscape. Walking the suspended bridges above the roaring underground river, surrounded by walls of ancient rock rising into darkness, is an experience that stays with you long after you leave.
